Geoff Carter
GEOFF CARTER, born in 1954 in Derbyshire was educated at Long Eaton Grammar School and the University of Sheffield, obtaining an Honours Degree and Post Graduate Diploma in Architecture in 1975. He worked with Architects Design Group from 1972 to 1981 on a variety of projects which included squash clubs, office conversions, industrial and housing projects.
He has considerable building experience and a pragmatic and practical approach to architecture. He believes it is possible to work within tight parameters laid down by commerce or statutory authorities and still produce good buildings which have that little bit of extra to make them architecture.
He is clear that architects have to establish a positive role for the lmselves in the building team and to do this they must prove that they can produce buildings on time, on cost and which are simple and easy to build. He sees these disciplines as in no way contradictory to the promotion of good architecture; in fact he welcomes them.
He has gained a wealth of experience on residential developments, resulting in the Practice currently working for sixteen Housing Associations and several National Housebuilders and Developers.
Recently in response to changing attitudes and legislation, he has become a Registered Assessor of the National Home Energy Rating Scheme and currently advises his Housing Association clients in the approach to energy conscious design.
He is married with a son and two daughters and his hobbies are reading, music, guitar, cycling and classic cars. He is a member of the TR Register and owns a 1954 Triumph TR2 . He is very active in local cricket and plays for Breaston Cricket Club having been a member since 1977 and Secretary since 1987. In 1994 he became a qualified English Cricket Board Youth Coach. He is also a keen supporter of Derby County Football Club and the practice sponsors Breaston Football Club Under 16's.
